Winnie the Pooh - Book Project

For this project, I created a movie poster, a book cover and spreads inspired by the classic children's novel "Winnie the Pooh". During this project, I chose to create two corresponding pieces: the book cover and the movie poster. It is important to mention that this A.A. Milne novel is now public domain.
As I was doing my research, I created a moodboard showing imagery, colours and typefaces. This helped me create the feel I wanted and put together my pieces. I picked colours found within the moodboard and found that together, they were fitting for the piece. I also chose to stick to serif fonts as I felt they carry the same classic quality as the novel.

I began by creating the movie poster. I was heavily inspired by the paper cut aspect I had found while creating my moodboard. I chose to move forward with the orange, yellow and green colour palette where yellow is a colour associated with the character of Pooh. I picked three illustrations which I felt best represented the novel: Pooh, a bee hive, and a bee (to represent his love for "hunny"). The action of Pooh looking up has two meanings: looking up to the hive and looking up to his own name. I felt the green was a great addition to the orange and yellow, creates a contrast without being too jarring.
For this book cover, I moved forward with the same illustration as the poster previously shown. For the spine, I chose to break up the large orange area with the green with the orange text instead. For the back cover, I added the hive to call back to the front cover, without being repetitive.
Finally, for the text formatting, I put down the first three chapters and created my typographic layout. For the opening page, I added an original illustration of Christopher Robin and his friend Pooh as I think the illustrative nature of the original novel is important to its tone. Again, as a call back to the cover, I added the bee on the title page.

Overall, this project taught me a lot about formatting for print.
